Summer Internship Opportunity at Georgetown University
The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is currently accepting applications for its summer program at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Each summer, twelve of the most promising young minority male sophomores in the country are given the chance to travel to the nation’s capital and engage in prestigious internships while taking rigorous classes at Georgetown. The courses in government and economics are designed to provide these young men with the skills necessary to critically analyze the world’s problems while adhering to a deep respect for civil liberties. When the students are not in class or at work, they are often called upon to attend social functions designed to help them network in their field. Personal meetings with such leaders as Barack Obama, John Lewis, and Clarence Thomas are made possible by the intimate nature of the program.
The program runs from June 4 – July 29 and is a two-summer commitment. Tuition and housing are paid for by the Institute, while students are expected to pay for their transportation and food. In addition, those not placed in paid internships will receive a stipend in the amount of $2500. While there are no major requirements, the program focuses on attracting young men interested in the fields of law, politics, business, academics, and the ministry. Deans support both administrative and programmatic aspects of the organization. Deans will be individual advisors to a group of 6-8 young women. Each Dean will receive a $2,000 stipend for the nine weeks of the internship plus housing. We ask that Deans engage, on some level, with students after the summer program. FACULTY JOB OPENINGS
The Coursework at the Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) is part of a six-week summer educational institute that focuses on each young woman's (ages 14-18) ideas, questions, and concerns as they relate to leadership and their own development. The Faculty, who design and lead the courses, is comprised of men and women who are activists, teachers (at the high school or college level), and/or professionals interested in teaching young female leaders who attend New York City public high schools. Faculty will have interest and expertise in topics appropriate to a feminist youth leadership organization; and will design creative and engaging coursework that emphasizes the real life experience of women/girls/youth as well as their achievements, identity, and collective status in the world. We are interested in courses that connect with our mission and also connect with the identities of the young people in SNLP. The goal of the Coursework is to challenge traditional understandings of relevant subjects (such as civil rights, human rights, history, education, health, identity, community, religion, leadership) and to address issues/topics that relate to 14-18 year old women living in New York City. People of color and members of the LGBT community are strongly encouraged to apply.
Details of the Position: Each faculty member teaches one course, two times a week from July 3rd-August 11th, and attends two orientation meetings in June (one with other staff, one with students). Each class period is one hour and a half with a five-minute break, and is available to students for at least one hour per week outside of class (total time per week: 5-6 hours). Each faculty member has a Teaching Assistant and approximately 13 students in her/his course. Each faculty member will receive $2,000-$2,500 for the six weeks of teaching. Each faculty member will give written feedback to each student at the conclusion of the program.
If you are interested in being a Faculty Member: We ask that you submit a one-page description of the course(s) you would be interested in teaching (please include a one or two sentence rationale as to how the course fits into the overall SNLP mission, philosophy or goals), a resume, and a brief cover letter. We
actively encourage unusual and experimental ways of teaching, and are willing to consider different possibilities. The deadline for faculty applications is March 17, 2006, and we will choose our Faculty by the end of April 2006.
